Best time to visit

May to early October is ideal, with summer (June–August) offering the warmest weather, lively festivals, and all outdoor activities in full swing. Shoulder season (late spring and early autumn) brings pleasant temperatures, spectacular foliage, and fewer crowds, especially in national parks and historic centres.

Suggested day-by-day

  • Days 1–3: Quebec City – stroll the UNESCO-listed Old Town, climb the Citadelle, savour maple treats, and ride the funicular to Petit Champlain. Take a day trip to Montmorency Falls or Île d'Orléans for berry-picking and farm visits.
  • Days 4–5: Saguenay Fjord National Park – spot beluga whales, hike panoramic trails, and try canoeing on the fjord. Overnight in Baie-Éternité or Tadoussac.
  • Days 6–7: Return via Charlevoix – explore cute riverside villages, visit an art gallery, and sample local cheese or cider. Ride Le Massif’s scenic train if running and stop at Parc national des Grands-Jardins for a family-friendly hike.

Practical tips

Hire a car for greatest flexibility outside the cities; Quebec’s highways are well-kept with plenty of rest stops, but distances can be long in the Saguenay region. Book accommodation ahead for parks and Quebec City in summer. Most places accept cards, but a little cash is handy for countryside stalls. French is widely spoken; learning some basics will charm locals. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere.
