This 12-day journey takes in the highlights: time-worn Cusco, the lush Sacred Valley, the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, and magical Lake Titicaca – without packing every day to the brim or relying on ultra-high-altitude hikes.
Best time to visit
May to September is dry season in the Andes: expect sunny days and chilly nights, ideal for hiking and seeing the Inca ruins at their best, though June-August are busiest with international visitors. December to March is the wet season, with frequent downpours and lusher hills, but some treks (including the classic Inca Trail) may close for maintenance.
Suggested day-by-day
- Days 1-3: Acclimatise in Cusco – San Pedro market, Sacsayhuamán fortress, San Blas walks, plus a day trip to Pisac or Moray in the Sacred Valley.
- Days 4-6: Explore deeper into the Sacred Valley – visit Ollantaytambo’s fortress, Maras’ salt terraces, Chinchero, and local weaving villages.
- Days 7-8: Hop the train to Aguas Calientes and spend a day at Machu Picchu. Stay overnight to catch early or late entry when it’s quieter.
- Days 9-10: Return to Cusco or continue by bus and boat to Puno, the gateway to Lake Titicaca. Allow for leisurely lakeside exploring.
- Days 11-12: Take a boat tour to the floating Uros Islands and Taquile, or join a local homestay on Amantani Island before flying out of Juliaca.
Practical tips
Book Machu Picchu and train tickets well in advance – daily visitor numbers are capped, especially for Huayna Picchu hikes. Allow extra days for altitude adjustment, and travel overland between Cusco and Lake Titicaca for less hassle than flying. Bring cash for markets and small villages, but keep valuables stashed securely. Local colectivos (shared taxis) run frequently within the Sacred Valley and are far cheaper than private drivers for day trips.
